Oscar-nominated Iron Man 2 star admits his ‘career is in the toilet’, reveals he had to borrow money to survive: ‘My ship is sinking’

Mickey Rourke says his career is in the toilet and he’s broke. He said that he was forced to pick Big Brother over a bad indie film.

Mickey Rourke, the Hollywood star who played the main villain Whiplash in Iron Man 2, has admitted that he isn’t being offered any good movie roles lately. During a conversation on the popular reality show Celebrity Big Brother, he shared with a co-contestant that after years of career setbacks, a long COVID pause, and a seven-month actors’ strike, he had no choice but to borrow $500,000 from the bank just to cover his bills. After facing financial pressure, he had to choose between doing Big Brother or accepting what he described as “a really bad independent movie.”

“Everybody in those picket lines is an out of work actor, there would be the flavour of the month actor show up to just say, ‘how great am I, I’m in the picket line with all the poor people that will never get a job, aren’t I wonderful’,” he shared with Hughes, (Via metro.UK). Mickey admitted to knowing “nothing” about Big Brother, and said that he imagined he’d spend only four days in the house. “I’ve had it up to here with really bad independent movies,” he said. “So I said, you know what? Let’s go do that thing in England. I want to go to London anyway.”

Just a few days into the show, Mickey Rourke has already sparked backlash and is facing calls for his removal over his behaviour toward host AJ Odudu. He was reportedly also given a formal warning by producers after making homophobic remarks targeting Dance Moms star JoJo Siwa after she revealed she was gay. The Hollywood star joked that JoJo “wouldn’t be gay anymore” if he stayed in the house longer. He also made an offhand comment about voting “the lesbian out” before turning to her and saying, “I’m not talking to you.” Meanwhile, fans were left wondering how someone like Mickey, who was set for a comeback after being nominated for an Oscar for 2008’s The Wrestler, has ended up on the reality show.

“My career is in the toilet. I’m not getting A-list movies anymore,” Mickey admitted. He also told The Sun, “I’ve made a lot of mistakes. I have nobody to blame but myself for my ship sinking.” Now, he’s hoping for a second chance and says he wants directors to see him for who he is today, not for his reputation.

Mickey spent most of Tuesday’s episode wandering around like he didn’t know where he was or what was happening. ITV responded after backlash exploded online; some even asked AJ if she was comfortable in the presence of Mickey.  A spokesperson, according to the Independent, said, “All Housemates receive Respect and Inclusion training and an extensive briefing from the Big Brother Senior team… Instances of inappropriate behaviour are dealt with appropriately and timely.” But the statement didn’t help; the fact that he was only given a warning and allowed to stay on the show has led to even more anger. Let’s not forget that this isn’t the first time Big Brother has been called out for broadcasting ugly moments. In 2005, Indian actress Shilpa Shetty was racially targeted on the show. Friday’s episode will likely see Mickey voted out, especially with JoJo having the power to choose someone for eviction.
