While Aashim Gulati has been in show business for a long time, it was Taj: Divided by Blood that turned the spotlight on the actor. Playing Salim to Naseeruddin Shah’s Akbar in the ZEE5 drama, Aashim has impressed critics and audiences with his intense performance. However, not many would know that the actor started his career with television, having been part of shows like Gulmohar Grand, Yeh Hai Aashiqui, Dil Sambhal Jaa Zara and Karn Sangini.

While promoting the second season of his show, Aashim shared that while he was doing TV, people warned him that he would get ‘typecast’ and ‘not get films’. He shared that for him, there were two sides – to be financially stable and also to be creatively satisfied. “However, it was never an ‘or’ thing for me, I knew it had to go hand in hand. I have never worked for money and also took effort to do work that I wanted to do. I wasn’t doing TV for money but I also believe in not saying no to work that comes your way. I was always sure that I would keep working, as that will result in more work. I never judged myself and also, I didn’t have many choices. So I took everything as an opportunity and learned with every character and project,” the actor told indianexpress.com.

For anyone who’s been on television, participating in reality shows is an easy way to gain fame and money. When asked what made him stay away from them, he smiled to say, “I think both instant fame and money are very dangerous. It’s a myth. I don’t think one would be able to handle the fame or money that comes all of a sudden. It’s never for your good. I think I have been offered a number of such opportunities where I could get fame and money but I was never interested. Whenever it came knocking, I didn’t open the door. I was not at home (laughs).”

In recent times a lot of young actors have spoken about how social media followers have become the measurement of one’s success. Today, casting directors and makers even pick faces on the basis of their popularity rather than acting talent. When asked about the same, Aashim replied in the affirmative, also making a rather explosive revelation. “I did lose a job to someone, who had many, many followers. This is what is happening now. I always thought that if you are working well, you will get more work. I never knew that now you get acting jobs like this. That’s another story going on. I think one needs to adapt and change with time,” he shared. As we quizzed if he has been actively pushing more content on social media because of this, the actor replied, “I tried to, I tried very hard. However, it looks like I am trying (laughs). It doesn’t come naturally, as one needs to do these things in their own capacity.”

We also discussed with Aashim how many actors are given weird advice by people around them while they are starting out. After a pause, the 32-year-old said, “That I have big lips. This person told me that I should get a lip job, and get it reduced. At the time I did believe them and I was like I have to get it reduced. I told my father, and he was like ‘Shut up’. So that was the end of my lip story.” He added that the world would be surprised how men get such feedback as much as females.

Many fans have often pointed the resemblance between Aashim Gulati and Sidharth Malhotra, and even Aditya Roy Kapur. The actor said that he’s been hearing about the same for a long time and earlier, it would even affect him. “I used to think that my career would end. They are such good actors and so good looking, how would I ever find my place? However, I realised that I was putting myself down and these actors are amazing. I was recently told I look like this F1 driver and then the ‘Greek mix of Aditya and Ranveer Singh’. So I now take it as a compliment, agreeing to them that yes indeed, I am a mix of all of these good-looking men,” Aashim concluded with a laugh.
