Suhasini Maniratnam opens up about marriage with Mani Ratnam, says they don’t have major arguments: ‘When he works with cinematographer who uses four-letter words…’
Suhasini Maniratnam opened up about her relationship with husband Mani Ratnam, and what concerns her the most about him.

Actor-filmmaker Suhasini Maniratnam opened up about her personal and professional partnership with her celebrated filmmaker husband Mani Ratnam. She said that mutual respect is the foundation of their relationship, and this helps them avoid arguments. She also expressed concern about the kind of people he associates with, and also addressed their fruitful creative collaborations. They tied the knot in 1988.
In an interview with Mathrubhumi, Suhasini said, “We both listen to each other’s creative output. We might not on the very first day when we have an idea, but I respect his creative ability and he respects my creative ability. So, there cannot be any major arguments. Yes, there will be arguments because I’m very concerned about him.”
Asked what concerns her the most about her husband, she said, “When he works with a cinematographer who uses four letter words in every sentence, I tell him it’s going to come into your dialogues since you’re so close to him. Those kinds of influences are what I’m worried about, because cinema is a reflection of life. Whatever you see in life, is reflected in cinemas. So, I’m watching him. And he also watches me. He tells me I shouldn’t take everything for granted, and that I have to work smart, not hard.”
Suhasini also addressed their successful creative partnerships, and added, “We have respected each other’s work from the beginning, otherwise we wouldn’t have written films together. Before Ravana, I have written Roja, Thiruda Thiruda, Iruvar, or any other film that he has done. I was the official dialogue writer for those four films.”
In a past interview with ABP, Suhasini had said that being Mani Ratnam’s wife is a ‘full-time job’. She said, “Twenty four hours are not enough to be Mani Ratnam’s wife, but that’s how women work all the time. See, when I was young, 20 years old, hormones worked differently. I wanted to stay in an apartment with some of my girlfriends and not get into family issues, not even get married. I wanted a career, and I wanted my freedom. But then slowly, when you get into a family setup, something happens within you which takes over.”
Mani Ratnam last directed his epic two-part Ponniyin Selvan films, featuring an ensemble of stars that included Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram, Jayam Ravi, and Trisha Krishnan.
