Jyotika defends husband Suriya’s ‘absolute cinematic experience’ Kanguva, criticises film’s ‘jarring’ sound: ‘The first half hour doesn’t work’

Jyotika shares her review of Suriya's latest film, Kanguva, which is not just battling onscreen villains, but also offscreen negativity and mixed reviews at the box-office

Suriya’s ambitious period drama, Kanguva, hit the screens on Thursday, but the response from the audience wasn’t what the makers would have expected. Even after whirlwind promotions for almost a month before the release, Kanguva blew hot and cold at the box office with the reviews from critics and audiences alike not completely in favour of the film. However, there is also a growing conversation about how the overwhelming negativity on the film felt like a vested agenda by a few. Interestingly, actor and Suriya’s wife Jyotika took to her social media accounts to share her thoughts on the film.

Starting off the note by saying this is her opinion on the film as an audience member and not Suriya’s wife, Jyotika said, “Kanguva is a spectacle in cinema. So proud of you Suriya, for the actor you are and how you dare to dream to take cinema forward.” Disspelling thoughts that this note was yet another customary post that waxes eloquently about a film made by a family member, she wrote, “Definitely the first half hour doesn’t work and the sound is jarring. Flaws are a part of most Indian, so that’s only fair, especially in this kind of a film wherein one experiments largely. And it is just the first half hour from the whole three hours.”

She added that Kanguva was an absolute cinematic experience, and reserved special praise for cinematographer Vetri Palanisamy’s work. After getting these opinions out of the way, Jyotika wrote a scathing statement about the negative reviews from “media and certain fraternities.” “I’m surprised with the negative reviews from media and certain fraternities as it’s not done by them to this high level for the most unintellectual big-budget films I have seen earlier with age-old stories where women are stalked, double meaning dialogues are spoken, and have the most over-the-top action sequences,” she wrote.

Jyotika also questioned the absence of any positives of Kanguva in many reviews. “The women action sequence in the second half, and the young boy’s love and betrayal for Kanguva? I think they forgot about the good parts while reviewing.”

The Shaitaan actor went on to question the veracity of such reviews, and urged team Kanguva to keep their chin up despite what was happening around them. “This makes me wonder largely whether one should ever read, listen or believe them after all. It’s sad that they chose this much negativity for Kanguva on Day 1, even before the first show was over (seemed more like multiple group propagandas) when it actually deserves an applause for the concept and effort taken by the team to create 3D and such a magnificent visual,” she wrote, ending the note with, “Be proud Team Kanguva, as the ones commenting negative are doing just that and nothing else to their credit to uplift cinema.”
