Simi Chahal on her role in Mastaney: ‘Noor is one of the most beautiful looking characters that I have done’
Simi Chahal portrays a woman with a burning desire for freedom in the upcoming Punjabi-language period drama Mastaney.

The highly anticipated period drama Mastaney transports audiences to 18th century Lahore. The film recounts the tale of Iranian ruler Nadir Shah’s return to his country after invading India and defeating the Mughal ruler Muhammad Shah in Delhi. As Shah made his way across Punjab with his loot and people meant to serve as slaves, his troops were intercepted by the Sikhs. Taken by surprise, the ruler demands to know about the warrior clan and the film foregrounds their feisty spirit.
Starring Tarsem Jassar, Gurpreet Ghuggi, and Rahul Dev, the female lead is played by Simi Chahal who portrays the character of Noor. Just as the small but formidable band of Sikh warriors harbour a burning desire, so does Noor. Speaking about the character, Chahal said, “She stays in one place with a few girls and she has a burning desire for freedom. Just like the men in the film are ‘mastaney, she is ‘mastani’ in her own way, obsessed with freedom and is thinking day and night about how she can escape from the walls around her.”
Beginning her journey in the film industry with Bambukat (2016), Chahal had worked with Jassar and director Sharan Art on Rabb Da Radio 2 (2019). While most of the characters portrayed by her so far are romantic ones, Mastaney presented her with an opportunity to be part of a film mounted on a huge scale. With intricate, handcrafted sets created with attention to the minutest of details, the period drama aims to transport viewers to the bazaars of Lahore in 1739.
Raving about the ornate costumes, Chahal remarked, “The costumes of the film are beautiful. Sharan has had an eye for detail and went through each thing himself to be true to history. He went to the market himself and found out about colours and the type of material used. From the shoes to the cap that I am wearing, each thing is made in-house and that feeling was completely different.”
Chahal looks stunning in the film, highlighting the innocence and naivete of her character. As part of the preparation for her role, she tried to capture the dialect that was spoken in Lahore at the time, to further lend authenticity and be true to history.
“Noor is one of the most beautiful looking characters that I have done and I had a great time playing this character,” concluded Chahal.
Directed by Sharan Art, Mastaney is set to release on August 25, 2023.
