BIG SWITCH 2
UTV Bindass,Friday,7 pm
Rating: *
Whats it about?
After a fairly successful season one,Big Switch is back with a new concept for its second innings. While the first one switched lives of rich brats and placed them in slums, the second season emphasises on a crucial issue generation gap.
The lack of understanding between parents and children forms the core of the show. And Big Switch 2 attempts to provide the solution by swapping two sets of parents and kids. After dealing with a new family,a jury comprising of friends and family members decides which of the two parties is right.
The first episode saw a metal-head,rebellious Feroze Khan battle it out with a new family while make-up artist and transgender Jazz embraced his new parents for accepting his sexual orientation. While one kid missed his real parents, the other craved to spend time with the new ones.
Whos in it?
The show is anchored by ex-VJ Gaurav Kapoor and every episode shows two sets of families being swapped. Its Generation Y comprising of rebellious teenagers in a tug of war with the strict, loving yet misunderstanding Generation X.
Whats hot?
The concept is fresh as no other Indian reality show has experimented with the issue of generation gap. And sometimes it can be heartening to see the two parties change their stand by the end of the show.
Realising their parents importance, some kids can be seen apologising; and on the other hand there are parents who eventually begin to make the effort of understanding their children.
Whats not?
Surprisingly,a channel like UTV Bindass, which has always aimed at shedding stereotype related to the youth, has fallen into the same trap. The teenagers chosen for the show fit the mould they are angry, violent, mannerless and selfish. Hence, even though the show differs in concept, the execution is in line with the routine fare of instigating, voyeuristic reality shows.
Troubled teenagers misbehaving and smashing toilets and violent outbursts make for the highlight of the one hour-long show. The show in a way encourages the gap between parents by declaring one side as the winner, and this is not a very desirable message. And Kapoor as the anchor fails to impress with his one-liners and commentary.
