Director Siddharth Anand spoke about Shah Rukh Khan’s character not having a religion in Pathaan, and revealed that there is a deleted scene pertaining to the character’s backstory that might be included in the streaming release. SRK plays the titular spy in Pathaan, a big-budget action film that has become the highest-grossing Hindi movie in India after being released to tremendous response in February. Pathaan has grossed over Rs 1000 crore globally.

In one scene, Deepika Padukone’s character directly asks Pathaan if he’s a Muslim, and Pathaan tells her his backstory. He says that he was abandoned in a movie theatre, and was given the name Pathaan after he helped rescue children in an Afghan village. He tells her that he visits the village every year.

In an interview with Baradwaj Rangan for Galatta Plus, Siddharth was asked about ‘Shah Rukh not having a religion’ in the film, and him being ‘Amar, Akbar, and Anthony’ in a way. Siddharth said that it’s all down to the shared belief sytem that him and Aditya Chopra and writers Shridhar Raghavan and Abbas Tyerewala have.

Siddharth said that for Pathaan, his country is all that matters. He said, “The four of us have the same belief system, and the same films we’ve grown up on, and believed in. We share that. So, the fact that he doesn’t have a name, and he’s found in a theatre that was actually called Navrang… This got edited out, but you might see this in the OTT version… None of us looks down upon it, none of us says this is cheesy.”

Also starring John Abraham, Dimple Kapadia and Ashutosh Rana, Pathaan served as Shah Rukh’s grand comeback to starring roles after over four years. At the film’s sole press event, Shah Rukh thanked audiences for accepting the film, and described Deepika, himself and John as Amar, Akbar and Anthony.
