At the trailer launch of his highly-anticipated Eid release Sikandar, Salman Khan addressed the criticism of casting Rashmika Mandanna, his 31 years younger co-star, opposite him in the AR Murugadoss action thriller. However, singer Sona Mohapatra has called out the blatant patriarchy in Salman’s response.
“Heroine aur heroine ke ‘BAAP’ ko koi problem nahin hai’..to jab inki shaadi ho jaegi &..’permission’ like garbage response on being asked about the out of context 31 year gap with his leading lady-the ‘BHAI’ of toxic masculinity, patriarchy doesn’t realise that #India has changed?,” Sona tweeted on Monday evening.

She referred to Salman’s statement at the Sunday trailer launch, “Jab heroine ko problem nahi ho rahi toh aapko kyu ho rahi hai. Inki shadi hogi, bachchi hongi, toh unke sath bhi kaam karenge. Mummy ka permission toh mil he jaega (When the heroine doesn’t have a problem, why do you have a problem? When she gets married and has a daughter, I will work even with her daughter. Mom will give permission).”
This isn’t the first time Sona called out Salman’s patriarchy. Back in 2019, after the actor threw shade at Priyanka Chopra for walking out of his film Bharat because she wanted to get married to Nick Jonas. Sona alleged that Salman’s fans began trolling Priyanka for the same, shaming her for tying the knot with a man 10 years younger than her. “They meme her 10 year age gap with her husband but conveniently forget that their idol is close to 20 years older than her,” Sona had tweeted then. “Cus Priyanka Chopra has better things to do in life, real men to hang out with and more importantly, girls to inspire with her journey,” Sona said in another tweet, slamming Salman for his “low brow digs.”
Sona also criticised Salman in 2016 for saying that he felt like “raped” after going through intense wrestling training for Ali Abbas Zafar’s Sultan. Later, Sona flagged death threats from alleged Salman fans to the National Commission of Women. “Such and such mails come my way regularly, from the followers of this ‘hero’ of bad behaviour. This beacon of ‘human’ values who inspires such serial toxic behaviour is actually claiming the title of Bharat, drawing parallels with our great nation, nothing lesser, @NCWIndia,” she had tweeted.
