Amid Rs 40 cr fee claims for Bloody Daddy, Shahid Kapoor says he’s never worked for money: ‘It would be dishonesty to my craft’

Ahead of Bloody Daddy's release, Shahid Kapoor laughs at the claims of him charging Rs 40 crore for each film. He also reasoned his parents Pankaj Kapoor and Neliima Azeem's passion towards work is the reason why he will never look at it as a purely mercenary activity.

Shahid Kapoor’s big-budgeted film Bloody Daddy was announced amid much fanfare last week. Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, the actioner will stream on Jio Cinema starting June 9. At the trailer launch event, the actor-director duo spoke about working together, but what made most noise was the fee that Shahid allegedly takes for a film. A reporter asked the actor about charging Rs 40 crore for every film, to which his director said that it’s more than that. Shahid, on his part, laughed it off, adding that Ali charges higher than the mentioned amount

Indianexpress.com met Shahid on Wednesday and quizzed him about the same. The actor laughed at how the figures mentioned as a joke made headlines. “Kisine bol diya mazaak mein, bina soche samjhe (Someone said it in jest without a thought), and it got picked by everyone. No one will offer me work after all this news,” he joked.

However, we wondered how important money is for him and whether he has or would sign a project just for a big cheque. After a pause, Shahid said, “I wish I had that side. Aisa nahi hota hai (it never happens). Honestly, I sometimes wish I could do it, everyone wants to be rich but it’s really tough. I would not be able to act for money, kuch aur kar bhi lu shayad (would rather do something else). I am just too passionate about it. Also, it’s all about feeling, you may not always have a 10/10 situation and it can be even around 6 or 7. But to work with 4/10 only for money is like beimaani towards my craft. I cannot be dishonest.”

The actor reasoned his upbringing, and seeing his parents’ love for their craft for this conditioning. He said, “You see, my parents (Pankaj Kapur and Neliima Azeem) the amount of passion they had for their work. They were not millionaires and trillionaires and they led a rather humble life. They might have been established, extremely appreciated, and credible artists but they were not superstars with crores of money. They were my heroes, my father and mother. The caliber of their work, and their passion have stayed with me. And I cannot push that out of my system.”

Talking about how he approaches work, Shahid Kapoor had a rather interesting analogy where he compared a film to a business. He shared how he feels appreciated when people relate to his work as he works with that kind of motivation where the audience can associate and experience the emotions his character goes through. “If I am feeling that connect myself with the script, it’s all well and if not I do discuss it with the team. As an actor, I feel you are a member of the board, if the movie is a business model. So you cannot come in like an employee, you have to be a partner and add value to the product. If that’s not happening why am I getting paid that amount, or given so much importance? And I want to work like that where there’s a collaborative process. In simpler words, I take the story forward and add my little bit to that. By doing that I also feel deserving enough for being in that central role.”

With so much creativity imbibed, we wondered if he plans to someday helm the director’s hat or even produce a film. “Not at all, I am happy being an actor. Now I am also a family man, and there’s a lot to deal with as an actor. I anyway, get too deep into things and need to remind myself ke har jagah mat ghuso. So I am just happy with what I have right now,” Shahid Kapoor concluded.
