‘Scared of air turbulence’ Varun Dhawan deboarded plane citing director’s health as excuse, recalls Janhvi Kapoor: ‘It’s my responsibility…’
Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari stars Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor recently opened up about their rapport and their shared fear of flight turbulence.

As their upcoming romantic comedy, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, gears up for release, actors Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor are busy with its promotions. This is the duo’s first movie together since director Nitesh Tiwari’s Bawaal (2023), and they have been melting fans’ hearts with their adorable off-screen chemistry.
During a recent interview, Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor opened up about their rapport and their shared fear of flight turbulence. Recalling an incident that happened during the production of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, Janhvi shared how Varun backed out of flying at the last minute, claiming that their director, Shashank Khaitan, was unwell. Mentioning that they fight a lot, she shared that they, however, are on the same page when it comes to flight turbulence. “We both have skipped many flights because we are scared of turbulence. We constantly track the weather whenever we have to take a flight,” she shared during a chat with Bollywood Hungama.
Varun added, “When we were coming back to Mumbai after wrapping the Udaipur schedule, it was raining cats and dogs. Janhvi, Maniesh Paul, I, and a few others got onto a plane. We were all sitting, and then people started telling me that the weather in Mumbai was bad. The situation was as if they had announced the alert that comes after red for Mumbai. Hearing all this, I got up, saying I can’t fly.”
Janhvi interjected, “Then he started giving a performance to the air hostess about how he had to deboard. He’s like, ‘You know, my director is really unwell.'” When Varun pointed out that Shashank Khaitan was actually in pain, Janhvi clarified, “But he had been in pain the whole schedule. Yet, he had travelled back and forth about five times. Varun was like, ‘I don’t know what he’ll do without me. It’s my responsibility. I have to go back.’ Hearing this, I also approached the door, wondering if I should stay or go.”

Varun, nonetheless, maintained that the flight had already been delayed by then due to weather conditions, and a few other passengers had also deboarded. “I came near the gate, holding my pillow. I really wanted to go back to Mumbai to meet my dogs. ‘Are you really going?’ I asked, and he said yes and asked if I wanted to come. It felt like a moment with the BGM of Veer-Zaara playing in the background.”
However, he deboarded the flight without her. Fast forward a few hours, and Varun is at their hotel in Udaipur when Janhvi and Maniesh arrive, saying they also got off the plane. When asked why, Maniesh said, “Arrey, woh Janhvi rone lagi plane mein. Main kya karu, chodu usko? Toh leke aagaya (Janhvi started crying on the plane. What should I have done? Left her there? I’ve come with her).”
