Ram Gopal Varma claims Amitabh Bachchan did not understand Sarkar’s ‘Govinda’ track was in reference to Lord Krishna: ‘He thought of the actor’
Ram Gopal Varma claimed that Amitabh Bachchan did not understand the meaning of 'Govinda Govinda' in Sarkar, and thought it was a reference to the actor Govinda.

Actor Amitabh Bachchan and filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma were frequent collaborators until a few years ago, and in a recent interview, RGV recalled the making of Sarkar, in which Big B played the lead character Subhash Nagre, an almost Godfather-like character. Sarkar was quite appreciated back when it was released in 2005, as was its background score, by Amar Mohile. RGV spoke about the ‘Govinda Govinda’ track and said that Amitabh didn’t quite understand it when he first heard it.
In a chat on his YouTube channel, RGV claimed that when he first made Amitabh Bachchan hear the track, Bachchan was taken aback because he assumed that it was making a reference to the actor Govinda. RGV then explained to him what the track actually meant. “When I first made Mr Bachchan hear the track, he looked at me as if I had lost my mind. He was like, ‘Where did Govinda come in?’ Govinda, the actor,” he shared.
RGV said that he proceeded to give some “gyaan (information)” to Bachchan, and explained that the ‘Govinda Govinda’ chant was in reference to Lord Krishna. “He (Subhash Nagre) is some manipulator. Like Krishna, he is powerful also, manipulator also, and I thought it will be highly symbolic to use the word. Some stupid thing I gave, which he bought at that time. But my main thing was to pump in that, one of my favourite tracks into that film,” he said.
In an earlier chat with Film Companion, RGV had shared that he had had only one disagreement with Bachchan throughout their collaborative journey, and this was on the set of Sarkar. The director and the actor could not agree on Amitabh’s character’s expressions in a particular scene and after going back and forth for a while, RGV agreed tp shoot it in a way that the actor wanted. But later that night, Amitabh called him and said that the director was right and they agreed to reshoot the scene in RGV’s style. “He said, ‘Ramu I have been thinking about what you said. I think you are right, let’s please reshoot it.’ When we reshot it the next day, he went far beyond what I had imagined! That’s when he came with this famous hand gesture in the film. That’s him, not me. My brief was only to do it without emotions, cold blooded,” he said.
