Rahul Roy revealed he saw people throwing coins at the screen when his character was introduced in Aashiqui. He also shared how he was offered the movie.

Actor Rahul Roy made his Bollywood debut with Mahesh Bhatt’s 1990 film Aashiqui, alongside Anu Agarwal. The film became one of the most celebrated films of the time and is loved even today for its music. Recently, Roy shared that he was finalised for the role within a few minutes of meeting Bhatt. The actor also revealed he saw people throwing coins at the screen when his character was introduced in the movie.
Rahul told Bollywood Hungama that he met Mahesh Bhatt at his office on the recommendation of his mother, who was a writer. “Within 4 to 6 minutes of our first meeting, he (Bhatt) told me I would be doing the film,” the actor recalled.
After the film’s release, Rahul, along with Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt went to Mumbai’s Metro Cinema. “After Aashiqui’s release, Mahesh and Mukesh accompanied me to Metro Cinema. Outside, people cheered for me. I didn’t have bodyguards then. Inside the theatre, people threw coins when my character was introduced with the song Saanson Ki Jarurat Hai Jaise,” shared Rahul while adding that he was so overwhelmed with audience’s reaction that he called Mahesh Bhatt to express gratitude.
But even after six months of the film’s release, Rahul did not get any film offers. But in the next eleven days, he signed 47 films. “For six months, I didn’t get anything. But then in 11 days, I signed 47 films,” shared Rahul. He also revealed that he was paid Rs 30,000 for Aashiqui which did phenomenal business at the box office.
After the success of the film, Rahul made it a point to share some part of his salary with Mahesh Bhatt as a token of gratitude for launching him in the film industry. “Whatever I felt like giving him, I used to go there and give to him. He used to ask for books, so I used to gift him books,” shared Rahul. Anupam Kher who was also launched by the filmmaker follows the same tradition and shares a portion of his salary with him.
