There are no cheat shots when real artistes are involved. Actor Ashutosh Rana has revealed that for a sequence in his upcoming feature Bheed, his co-star Rajkummar Rao wanted him to slap him hard–and real.

In a clip shared by the official Instagram page of Sony Entertainment Television, the duo was in conversation with Kapil Sharma on his show to promote Bheed. They were joined by filmmaker Anubhav Sinha and actors Bhumi Pednekar, Dia Mirza and Kritika Kamra.

When Kapil asked Rajkummar Rao, if he was worried that the slapping scene in Bheed could become real considering the kind of actor Ashutosh Rana is and the way Anubhav Sinha shoots his film, Rajkummar revealed that the slap was in fact real. “Sachch mein he maar tha (He hit me for rea),” the actor told Kapil.

To which, Ashutosh replied that he had no intention of slapping the actor but Rajkummar was pretty insistent. “I wasn’t hitting him, I said let’s not do it! But he is such an honest actor. He asked me, ‘Sir please hit me,’ I said no, he asked me again, ‘Sir please hit me.’ I said no! Then he requested me again and then Anubhav came and said, ‘Ab jab woh keh raha hai… (If he is saying it)’,” Rana said as the audience burst into laughter.

Directed by Anubhav Sinha, Bheed chronicles the plight of migrants during the Covid-19-induced lockdown of 2020, when lakhs of migrant workers travelled to their hometowns from cities.

The teaser of the film had divided a section of people on the internet as it drew parallels with the horrors of partition, juxtaposing grim visuals of 1947 and the heartbreaking images of 2020 lockdown with a powerful voiceover which says, “Ek baar phir hua tha batwara, 2020 mein (The Partition happened once again, in 2020).”

Those who took offence over the teaser, felt it attempted to sensationalise the crisis with its deliberate reminder of the traumatic partition and was showing India in a poor light. Bheed also stars Bhumi Pednekar, Dia Mirza, Pankaj Kapur, Kritika Kamra and Kumud Mishra. The film is gearing to release on March 24.
