Kiran Rao reacts to Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s criticism of Aamir Khan’s past work, urges him to have ‘man to man’ conversation with her ex-husband
Kiran Rao reacted to Sandeep Reddy Vanga questioning Aamir Khan's films by reminding everyone of the actor's public apology for Dil, and the song 'Khambe Jaisi Khadi Hai'.
Kiran Rao reacted to Sandeep Reddy Vanga's criticism of Aamir Khan's work. Filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga recently took a dig at director Kiran Rao for ‘attacking’ his movies even though her ex-husband, Aamir Khan, has himself starred in a film where his character threatens Madhuri Dixit’s character with rape. In a new interview, Kiran denied talking about Vanga’s films, claiming that she has not even watched them. Through the interview, she also asked Vanga to speak ‘man to man’ with Aamir if he has issues with his films, as she is not ‘responsible’ for the actor or his body of work. Later, Vanga’s team issued a statement challenging Rao’s claims on X.
While speaking to The Quint, Rao asserted that she often spoke about misogyny and the representation of women in cinema, but none of her comments were ever targeted at Vanga.
“I haven’t commented on Mr Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s films because I have not seen them. I have often spoken on misogyny and the representation of women on screen, and I have talked about it on various platforms and at various times. But I have never taken the name of any film because it is not really about the specific films, it is about the issues. I will continue to speak on these issues. So, why Mr Vanga Reddy has assumed that I am talking about his film, you will have to ask him,” Rao said.
Later, Vanga’s team issued a statement on social media which read, “We neither our Director Mr
@imvangasandeep are making any assumptions Miss @ikiranrao! It’s a fact reported by a very big media channel.”
Vanga recently told Dainik Bhaskar, “Some people don’t understand what they are saying. One assistant director showed me the article from this superstar’s second ex-wife where she was saying that Baahubali and Kabir Singh promote misogyny, promote stalking. I think she doesn’t understands the difference between stalking and approaching. I want to tell that woman that go and ask Aamir Khan about the song ‘Khambe Jaisi Khadi Hai’, what was that?
Kiran also reacted to Vanga questioning Aamir’s films by reminding everyone of the actor’s public apology for Dil and ‘Khambe Jaisi Khadi Hai’. She pointed out, “Aamir is one of the few people I know who has apologised for specifically the song that Mr Reddy Vanga was talking about which is ‘Khambe Jaisi Khadi Hai’ and other such films. There are very few people who will actually look at their body of work and apologise for something they did and is problematic in retrospect.” Aamir had also told Aaj Tak that he is ‘ashamed’ of doing the song ‘Khambe Jaisi Khadi Hai’.”
The filmmaker reminded everybody that Aamir also addressed his past creative mistakes on the show Satyamev Jayate. She lauded Aamir for accepting his mistake, and said, “He is one of those people who have stepped up and taken responsibility as a creative person, as a person speaking to a mass audience for his work. I think it is really laudable.”
In conclusion, Kiran Rao also advised Vanga to take up his issues directly with Aamir Khan instead of dragging her into the conversation. “Honestly, if Mr Reddy has something to tell Aamir, he should do it man to man. I am not responsible for Aamir’s work or Aamir Khan. So, I wish Mr Reddy would address his questions directly to Mr Khan,” Rao said.
Kiran Rao has returned to direction after a long gap with Laapataa Ladies. The film is jointly produced Aamir Khan, along with Jyoti Deshpande.
