Kabir Bedi says open marriage with first wife Protima was for kids’ sake: ‘Both of us wanted to have affairs’
Kabir Bedi said that him and his first wife Protima decided to have an open marriage because they wanted to be together for their children but wanted to have affairs.

Kabir Bedi got married four times in his life and the first time that he tied the knot was with Odissi dancer Protima Bedi. Kabir and Protima had two kids, Pooja and Siddharth, but that marriage went through its share of ups and downs. In a recent interview, Kabir said that they decided to go for an open marriage because they wanted to be together for their kids, but also wanted to have affairs. He shared that even though they tried to make their open marriage work, it had to end.
In a chat with Digital Commentary, Kabir was asked about his relationship with his first wife and he said, “When you think about the past, you tend to have some regrets, everyone feels that and you think about what you could have done differently.”
Kabir then shared that at that time, they felt that the only thing keeping them together was their children. “At that time, we felt that if we want to be together, it is for the kids. And if our inclination is such that she wants to have an affair and I want to also have an affair, the best thing we can do is have an open marriage. You do whatever you want, and I will do what I want. We will stay together and parent our kids together. But ultimately, that didn’t work out. And it was a difficult thing to work,” he said.
Kabir said that even though they separated, he was always present in his kids’ lives. Since he was living and working in the US in those days, his kids would visit him for summer and winter breaks. He recalled, “Even though we separated, we divorced, I fulfilled all my responsibilities. I gave my house to her, and supported her too. We stayed friends all our lives because we had two kids, and we wanted the kids to know that even if the parents can’t stay together but they are still our parents.”
