Milkha Singh was in tears after attending a special screening of his biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

Legendary athlete Milkha Singh in an exclusive conversation with The Indian Express at the Idea Exchange in New Delhi spoke about why he decided to let Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra make his biopic on screen and Farhan Akhtar.

Bhaag Milkha bhaag has been in the news well before it first scene was shot. Milkha Singh’s decision to charge only Rs 1 took everyone by surprise.

“After my book was released,three-four directors approached me for making a movie. It was my son’s decision to make the movie for Rs 1. However,I mentioned a clause in the agreement that 10-15 per cent of the profit which the movie makes will go to our trust,” said Milkha Singh during the Idea Exchange at the Express Buildings in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Milkha Singh said the decision to chose the director was taken by his son and golfer Jeev Milkha Singh, who was a fan of Rakesh Omprakash Mehra after watching the movie Rang De Basanti.

“My son took me away for a moment and told me that if this movie will be made,it should be made by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. He had seen Rang De Basanti and insisted me to go for Rakeysh,” informed Milkha Singh.

After attending the special screening arranged for him recently,Milkha Singh said he was in tears and minced no words in lavishing praise on actor Farhan Akhtar and the director.

“Farhan Akhtar has done a brilliant job. He looked like my duplicate in the movie. The director, too, did a great a job. Also, the dialogues and the lyrics by Prasoon Joshi are brilliant. There was nothing which I felt should be changed in the movie,it was perfect,” said the former athlete.

Biopics,in the past, have played a major role in the awareness of the issue/sport among the youth of the country.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Chak De India did the same for hockey and Milkha hopes the youth gets “inspired” by the movie.

“I hope the youth gets inspired after watching the movie. I have seen a lot of hardship in life. Used to sweat a bucket during my training and hope the coming generations get inspired,” concludes the ‘Flying Sikh’.
