The Panvel Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested a man for allegedly pushing an 18-year-old college student from a moving train between Panvel and Khandeswar after women commuters confronted him for boarding the ladies’ compartment on December 18.
The accused, Akhtar Shaikh, 50, entered the ladies’ compartment of the Panvel-CSMT train as soon as it left the Panvel railway station, said the police. When the women objected, he allegedly became furious. The victim, Shweta Mahadik, was standing nearby, and he allegedly pushed her out of the train.
The police said she did not appear to have any external injuries but added that they could not rule out the possibility of internal injuries.
“Shaikh has no specific home in the city. During his medical examination, the doctor said that he seems mentally unstable and his medical treatment has started. He is in the police custody till December 22,” said Vijay Tayde, Senior Inspector of the Panvel GRP.
“It appears that the Shaikh left his home and was roaming in the city. The police are trying to find out his family,” added Tayde.
The police said the victim is a resident of Panvel and is a diploma student at a college in Kharghar. They said she was travelling in the Panvel-CSMT train along with her friend.
After she was pushed off the train, passengers immediately informed the railway police using the helpline. Shaikh was apprehended at the Khandeshwar railway station. The student called her father, and local residents took her to MGM Hospital. Her father also arrived at the hospital shortly after.
“The police reached out to the family using a contact number provided by her friend, and a police team arrived at the hospital. She underwent scans, but nothing major was found. She has since been recovering at home,” said Tayde.
The FIR was registered under Section 109 (i) (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with sections 138 (travelling without a valid ticket) and 162 (males entering or remaining in reserved female compartments without lawful reason) of the Railways Act against Shaikh.
