‘Expected that Ayan Mukerji would send me the script of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani,’ says Muzammil Ibrahim: ‘Ayan and I were good friends but…’
Muzammil Ibrahim said that he was set to star in Ayan Mukerji's Yeh Jawaani hai Deewani, but the casting agents came in the way.

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani remains a fan favorite, but the film might have turned out differently had director Ayan Mukerji cast Muzammil Ibrahim instead of Aditya Roy Kapur in one of its key roles. In a recent interview, Muzammil shared that he had been in touch with Ayan for the film and believed that he would be cast, until the casting agents came in the way.
In a chat with Hindi Rush, Muzammil was asked what exactly happened with his casting in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and he shared, “I think it got stuck at casting. I spoke to Ayan about it later, and we clarified it as well. It was a misunderstanding. I was expecting that Ayan would send me the script, but he didn’t. And perhaps, it was my fault that I didn’t ask for it, that Ayan, you told me you would give me the script.”
Muzammil Ibrahim shared that he had worked with Ayan Mukerji while Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was being scripted, but as soon as the conversation about casting began, the correspondence was taken over by the casting department. “That communication was being done via the casting people, even though Ayan and I were very good friends at the time. We had been discussing the process, but when the conversation shifted towards casting, I don’t know how they conducted the communication. Even the casting guys play a lot of games,” he said.
In an earlier chat with Siddharth Kannan, Muzammil shared that the role of Avi, eventually played by Aditya Roy Kapur, was written for him. “Ayan liked me a lot. He told me that he was writing Yeh Jaawani Hai Deewani keeping me in mind,” he shared. In the same chat, Muzammil spoke about his two-year relationship with Deepika Padukone and said that he endorsed her casting for the film, even though they had broken up years ago.
“He would often discuss casting with me, if he should take Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif… He would discuss this with me. We were very close. Deepika was the right cast for that film and I told him the same thing,” he said.
