Bhumi Pednekar defends Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s right of ‘self expression’, says the ‘challenge’ is for the audience: ‘What you learn from Animal…’
Bhumi Pednekar said that she watched Animal and added that she has never liked 'hyper-masculine films'. She also spoke about a filmmaker's right of self expression.

Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal was one of the most divisive films of 2023. The content of the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer did not impress many as they found it excessively violent and misogynistic. While many celebrities like Javed Akhtar and Parvathy Thiruvothu have come forth and criticised Animal, Bhumi Pednekar, in a recent interview, shared her opinion on the film.
When asked by The Lallantop about her thoughts on Animal, Bhumi said that she has watched the film but immediately added that she has never liked watching “hyper-masculine films”. “I watched Animal. Truly, I don’t like hyper-masculine films, and that’s not for just now, even earlier I never liked them. Even in Hollywood, the action films… I like watching rom-coms, those kind of films I really enjoy,” she said.
Bhumi Pednekar said that a movie is a filmmaker’s way of self expression but what the audience gathers from it, is the “challenge”. She shared, “I genuinely believe that a film is a filmmaker’s self expression, and that is very important. But as an audience, what you learn from that self expression, that is the challenge.”
Earlier, actor Konkona Sensharma also shared her thoughts on Animal and said that such films are not her cup of tea. “I have not watched Animal because I don’t feel it’s my kind of film. I haven’t really been drawn to it even from the reviews and things. Also, I am aware of his previous work, where stalking has been glorified, certain violence has been made acceptable in relationships, and that’s not what I stand for,” she shared with ANI.
Despite the criticism, Animal managed to make over Rs 900 crore at the global box office. The film recently started streaming on Netflix and thus, the conversation around the film has gathered steam once again.
