Babil says he used to ‘laugh his heart out’ with dad Irrfan Khan: ‘I don’t laugh like that anymore, it’s a strange thing’

Babil made his screen debut last year with Netflix's Qala, a film he began months after Irrfan Khan--one of the most loved actors of Indian cinema--lost his battle to cancer. He will be next seen in Friday Night Plan.

When Babil talks about his Baba, floodgates open. The young actor, who is ready with his second feature film Friday Night Plan, shares what it was like to be in a room with his family– mother Sutapa, brother Ayaan and actor father Irrfan Khan, who passed away in 2020.

Babil made his screen debut last year with Netflix’s Qala, a film he began months after Irrfan–one of the most loved actors of Indian cinema–lost his battle to cancer. Ahead of his second feature for the streamer Friday Night Plan, Indianexpress.com asked Babil if he could place readers in a room when all the four members of the family would have been together.

“It was peak cancer treatment. We were in London, Baba was living there,” Babil, who is in his mid 20s, recalled about the time Irrfan was getting treated in the United Kingdom.

“If you sat in that room, you would not know that Baba was a cancer patient. That was the beauty of Mumma, her treatment towards Baba and Baba’s reciprocation to that. I can never successfully place you in that room, because the conversations were so instinctive and so spontaneous that if I tried to do so, it wouldn’t be spontaneous.”

Babil takes a pause as he reflects on the time gone by and says when the family was together, there was “a lot of” laughter. “A laughter that I have not experienced ever since he passed away. I used to laugh my heart out, I don’t laugh like that anymore. That’s such a strange thing.

“When you lose somebody you laugh with, you don’t ever laugh the same. But instead of placing you in our room with my narration, I’d like to offer you an invitation to come. Baba is not there, but Mumma is there, so am I and my brother. And we are very nice.”

The breezy young adult Friday Night Plan directed by Vatsal Neelakantan is a complete departure for Babil from Anvitaa Dutt’s intense musical drama Qala. Babil jokes that in Qala, he was there only briefly, where he came cried and went back.

“But there was a lot of subtext that I had to carry. Jagan in Qala is a guy who is extremely spiritually secure. He had to carry the subtext, find the pain, there was a betrayal… But with this, it was more like you go on set, you know your character and you try to have fun with it. So the two were very different from each other, including the process and the environment,” he adds.
