Dabangg director Abhinav Kashyap revealed that he isn’t on talking terms with his brother, fellow director Anurag Kashyap. He said in an interview that they have had several altercations during the course of their lives, but the latest dust-up resulted in him severing ties. He said that their mother is waiting for Anurag to meet her in person, implying that she wants to scold him. He also accused Anurag of having raised a hand on him, and said that, as his younger brother, he cannot retaliate. In an interview with Bollywood Thikana, Abhinav said that comments about his mental health being disturbed, attributed to Anurag, are likely inaccurate.

Asked why he is picking fights with everyone from his Dabangg star Salman Khan to Anurag, Abhinav said, “It’s a personal matter between me and Anurag. It’s an emotional matter. A lot of people don’t know this, but the two of us grew up together. We went to the same boarding school in Gwalior, then we went to the same college in Delhi University; we also came to Mumbai at around the same time. We worked in the same industry together, so we are very close. We know each other better than our own parents know us. We keep arguing regularly. He’s the older one, and when he feels I’ve made a mistake, he has also raised his hand on me. He has beaten me many times, but I can’t hit him back because he’s older. The last time we spoke, I felt he was the one who’d made a mistake, so I stopped talking to him. That’s it.”

Abhinav said that he has only one message for his brother: “A lot of comments have been misattributed to him, or have been taken out of context. I also saw a meme where Anurag supposedly said that I have serious mental issues and that it’s not his place to comment. I don’t know if he actually said this. But I don’t get upset over what Anurag says, because he’s my older brother. He is also my guru, who has taught me everything I know. If I retaliate, my parents would feel bad. All I want to say to him is this: ‘Maine aapka intezaam kar diya hai. Aap ek baar ghar jaayein. Aapki mata ji ne saari purani chappalein, saare purane bartan ikkatthe kar ke rakhe hue hain aapke liye. Aapko khoob pesh kiye jayenge. Ek baar bas ghar chale jaayiye aap (I’ve made arrangements for you. All you need to do is go home; your mother has prepared all her old shoes and old utensils to greet you with. Just go home once).”

In an interview with NDTV in 2020, when Abhinav first made allegations against Salman Khan and his family, Anurag said, “My brother does not need me. Right from the beginning of our lives and our careers, it has been very clear that we will carve our own paths. My brother thinks very differently. We have different political ideologies, we look at cinema differently…” Anurag also posted a note on social media, explaining why he will not be commenting on his brother’s allegations against the Khans. He wrote, “My brother is his own person, he has his own voice, and I have been categorically told by him, ‘do not interfere in my business’. Me and my brother don’t agree with each other’s politics. That’s the amazing thing that this government has achieved — brothers don’t talk to each other, friends will fight. They have managed to break apart so many things.”

Anurag has had his own run-in with Salman; he was working on Tere Naam for the actor, but was unceremoniously dropped from the project. “I was not asked to leave Tere Naam, the film ghosted on me,” Anurag told Bollywood Bubble, adding, “I asked Salman a certain thing, after that nobody got back to me. I didn’t not even know when the film started shooting, and what happened.”
