In the first season of the popular game show Kaun Banega Crorepati, megastar Amitabh Bachchan was “reserved” and didn’t want contestants to ask him any personal questions, quiz master and TV producer Siddhartha Basu has revealed. Bachchan made his TV debut in 200o with the show, which made him an even bigger star as KBC became a rage. Basu, in an interview with Lallantop, said the megastar “slowly” warmed up to the show and started opening more with every season.

“In the first season, he was a bit reserved. But he had such a strong impact. Slowly he warmed up to the show, opened up to people more. Back then 10 contestants would get only one chance in one episode, now it is for a week. He would think it is not fair if people talk about his personal life, he was like, ‘Let’s get on with the game, win, lose, I don’t want to talk about it (personal life)’.

“He was reserved, didn’t want anyone to talk about him, it was an absolute no to have questions about his films. Worldwide, especially after the global meltdown, it became a story of the underdog. It was the human story playing out through the game. He warmed up to it and mastered it. He really started loving meeting people from all walks of life.”

Basu also revealed that Bachchan’s equation with the contestants is such today that if they go wrong — or are about to give a wrong answer — he starts feeling the pressure and panics. “Amit ji gets tensed, his relationship with the contestants is such that he starts feeling, ‘OMG she is going wrong, he is saying that.’ He does get stressed. But we try to stay like the Buddha! Play for merit, go for what it is. We keep moving forward like this and the stack is set, so you go according to that.”

During the interview, he was asked if the makers gauge a participant’s mind space and ask them a tough question if they are on a winning spree. Basu said that never happens and revealed that people have won more than Rs 200 cr on the show’s history.

“I am a very strict umpire, anyone who has worked with me knows this. The marketing and commercial team doesn’t sit with us, sure the broadcasters might sweat after a certain stage. No other show has given people this much cash prize. People have won over Rs 200 crore on KBC. If you compare it with a music show, the winners gets Rs 25 lakh, in one season.  Here, crores of rupees are given in every season, so it is very generous. But that pressure doesn’t come on to us,” he added.
