Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan took to social media to post a new selfie in celebration of their 16th wedding anniversary on Thursday. The celebrity couple tied the knot in a famously close-guarded ceremony at the Bachchan family home in 2007, after a brief courtship.

Taking to Instagram, Aishwarya posted a selfie that showed her and Abhishek smiling together, wearing white outfits. She wrote “sweet 16” in the caption of her post, and included several emojis. Abhishek captioned his post with a similarly brief message, and wrote, “🍬 16 🧿.” Their fans showered them with love in the comments section. “Happy anniversary to both of you,” one person wrote. Fardeen Khan and Tanishaa Mukerji also offered their congratulations in the comments section.

Earlier on Thursday, Aishwarya and Abhishek joined Amitabh Bachchan on a visit to Aditya Chopra’s house, to pay final respects to his late mother Pamela Chopra. A beloved figure of the Hindi film industry, ‘Pam aunty’ died on Thursday at the age of 74. Several Bollywood personalities paid a visit to the Chopras’ house to offer condolences.

Aishwarya and Abhishek’s wedding became national news in 2007, as did the birth of their daughter Aaradhya in 2011. The couple has worked together in films such as Dhai Akshar Prem Ke, Kuch Naa Kaho, Umrao Jaan, Dhoom 2, Guru, and Raavan. This week, Aishwarya will star in Ponniyin Selvan: II.

The couple often talks warmly about each other in interviews. Last year, Abhishek credited Aishwarya for putting him ‘back on track’ during the lockdown. “Some people ask, ‘Oh what did you do during the lockdown? What have you learned?’ Some people have learned to cook, some have picked up a new hobby, language, new skill set. I feel very overwhelmed, and I was speaking to my wife about it. And as all wives do, they put your lives into focus, they put you back on track. She said, ‘For the first time in your life, you got to spend the entire year with your family. And your family is safe and healthy today’,” he said.
