Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s one of the most celebrated films, Abhimaan, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan in the lead roles, was released 50 years ago on July 27, 1973. The lead pair of the film, Amitabh and Jaya, got married in June 1973, before the film hit the theatres. In fact, they had to go back to the sets of the film immediately after returning from their honeymoon in London as the climax was yet to be filmed.

Amitabh, has once revealed that the last scene of Abhimaan, where he and Jaya come out of the theatre after singing a song together, was shot on the next day of their return from London.

“The last shot of the film of Jaya and me coming out of the theatre after singing the climax song, and the crowds mobbing and applauding us, was done the day after we returned from our honeymoon in London,” Big B once wrote on social media.

Abhimaan revolves around a famous singer Subir (played by Amitabh), who falls in love with a village girl Uma (Jaya Bachchan) and marries her. But her rise to fame in the world of music makes him jealous and he leaves her. The film also starred Bindu, AK Hangal, and Asrani among others.

Bindu, who played the role of Chitra in the film, had shared in an earlier interview with Times of India, how Amitabh and Jaya looked smitten by each other during the film’s shoot. She said that they looked madly in love with each other and it was visible. Bindu also said that there was nothing to hide and they soon got married.

Earlier, Amitabh, through his blog, had revealed that he is unaware of who owns the rights to the film. The film was made under Amitabh and Jaya’s banner, AmiYa but the actor shared that the rights of the film are not with him.

Senior Bachchan wrote, “Amiya – the production name was our production. Ami from Amitabh and Ya from Jaya and our respective secretaries were looking after the nitty-gritty while we worked. But as is with most such productions, things went out of hand and we ended up with nothing. The rights all still belong to ‘don’t know who,’ perhaps one of the secretaries.”
