Poonam Sinha thought Shatrughan Sinha was unhappy with daughter Sonakshi’s birth: ‘Pura filmy scene ho gaya’
Shatrughan Sinha recalled the time when his wife assumed that he looked unhappy after their daughter Sonakshi Sinha was born, clarifying that his beard and character look from a Bengali film gave her the impression.

Shatrughan Sinha doesn’t believe in mincing his words, whether it is media interviews or filter-free conversations with colleagues. Every time the actor speaks on a public forum, he opens up a box of memories, takes everyone on a trip down memory lane, shares anecdotes and interesting stories of his co-stars from the ‘70s and ‘80s, and never fails to captivate his audience.
Recently while speaking at Sahitya AajTak 2024, reminiscing the time his daughter Sonakshi Sinha was born, he revealed that his wife Poonam felt the actor was upset after a girl child’s birth. However, the actor clarified that the reason for this misunderstanding was his appearance. The Shaan actor, who was shooting in West Bengal’s Asansol for a Bengali film, rushed to Mumbai’s Nanavati Hospital to get a glimpse of newly-born Sonakshi. He was still in his get-up where he was required to grow a beard. “I was playing a ‘chandal’ in Goutam Ghose’s Antarjali Jatra, and Sonakshi was born during the making of this 1987 film,” recalled Shatrughan.
“After the climax was shot, Goutam came to me with the good news. He broke the news that we were blessed with a baby girl. I was still covered in mud, sporting a long beard. That is how I was supposed to look. I somehow reached Kolkata (then Calcutta) and managed to reach Mumbai to see my bundle of joy,” narrated the Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha from Asansol constituency.
Upon reaching the hospital, his wife thought he wasn’t happy because she had delivered a girl. “Pura filmy scene ho gaya tha!” he exclaimed, adding, “Hum bahot khush the (I was very happy). I had been praying for my daughter for quite some time. After the birth of twins — Luv and Kush — I wanted a daughter. I explained to her that I arrived directly from the film’s set and didn’t grow facial hair because I was unhappy!,” he added.
Shatrughan, who appeared on Arbaaz Khan’s talk show, The Invincibles, revealed that during their courtship period, the actor had almost ‘dumped’ Poonam and didn’t speak with her for three years. “I got carried away, I became a victim of stardom. I used to think that no woman would ever be interested in me, and then, when they were, it’s human nature to lose control. Maine talaaq de diya, in a way… We completely cut off all contact, but I would come to know that she was enquiring about me, and my well-being. She would ask my staff to take better care of me, to feed me properly,” he divulged.
