Twenty four hours after the completion of voting for the municipal councils and municipal panchayats, Maharashtra State Election Commission on Wednesday evening announced 67.63 percent as the final polling percentage in the election which witnessed multiple instances of violence across the state on the polling day.

Though the SEC had originally announced polling in 246 municipal councils and 42 municipal panchayats, voting was postponed in some places and was held only in 222 municipal councils and 42 panchayats on Tuesday. Meanwhile, 154 wards in other 76 municipal councils and municipal panchayats also witnessed the postponement of the election. The voting in these areas will now be held on December 20.

“Since these were the local body polls, the data of voting percentage from several local bodies in a district were first compiled at the district collector level and was later sent to us. Therefore, it took longer time to announce official percentage,” an official from the SEC said.

Murgud municipal council in Kolhapur district witnessed the highest polling percentage with 88.43%. Besa Pipla in Nagpur district saw lowest voter turnout with 51.33 percent.

Already mired in controversy over poaching of leaders across allies and Opposition, the first phase of local body elections in the state on Tuesday was marred by instances of violence over bogus voters as political parties targeted each other across constituencies.
