NTA JEE Main 2025 Result Live Updates: Consumer protection watchdog warns coaching centres against misleading ads ahead of IIT-JEE results

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) on Thursday issued a stern warning to coaching centres to avoid misleading advertisements and unfair trade practices as IIT-JEE examination results approach. The consumer rights watchdog has advised coaching institutes to strictly follow the 2024 guidelines set for such entities.

According to an official statement, coaching centres must ensure their representations are "accurate, clear, and free from misleading claims". The CCPA emphasised that advertisements should transparently disclose key details including students' names, ranks, course types, and whether courses were paid for.

The authority has explicitly cautioned coaching centres against making "assurances of guaranteed success" and mandated that disclaimers be displayed prominently in the same font size as other important information.

The CCPA has already taken significant enforcement action in this sector, issuing 49 notices and imposing penalties totalling Rs 77.60 lakh on 24 coaching centres for violations. These centres have been directed to discontinue misleading advertisements and unfair trade practices. Previous CCPA actions have targeted coaching centres offering services for various competitive examinations, including UPSC CSE, IIT-JEE, NEET, RBI, and NABARD, among others

JEE Mains Session 2 Result News Live Updates: Over 13% students opted for higher studies over placements last year

Not all students of IIT Delhi are availing on-campus placement services, the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT D) has revealed through an exit survey commissioned by the institute amongst the students who graduated in August 2024.

In this exit survey, 1411 (53.1 per cent) students confirmed that they have received a job offer. On the other hand, 224 (8.4 per cent) students responded that they were self-employed, whereas 45 (1.7 per cent) students informed that they are working for a start-up and 66 (2.5 per cent) students were involved in entrepreneurship.

As per the exit survey, 359 (13.5 per cent) IIT Delhi students responded that they are going for higher studies, 47 (1.8 per cent) PhD students informed that they are waiting for a post-doctoral research opportunity or for a faculty position. Similarly, 321 (~ 12.1 per cent) students informed that they are preparing for different examinations, for example, civil services, engineering services, and examinations required for different government jobs.

JEE Mains Session 2 Result News Live Updates: Only 5% graduated students still ‘looking for appropriate career opportunities’ in IIT Delhi

IIT Delhi also conducted an exit survey among the graduated students which revealed that only 5 per cent graduated students (from last year) were still looking for appropriate career opportunities. A large fraction of these students comprises of PhD scholars looking for Post-Doctoral Research opportunities abroad.

Students availing on-campus placement in 2023-2024 had increased by about 25 per cent from 2022-23, which includes a six-fold increase in number of PhD scholars. The total number of graduates in 2023-24 is higher than the previous year by close to 10 per cent, and the number of PhD graduates by 30 per cent.

For the first time, IIT Delhi conducted a special placement drive for PhD Scholars in June 2024, which helped to increase the number of offers by seven times compared to the previous year. Notwithstanding the success of the initial attempt at PhD placement, a large majority of these graduates are placed through off-campus placement which is to be expected as they are recruited to occupy niche roles.

JEE Mains Session 2 Result News Live Updates: ‘On-campus placements are cut-throat’: IIT students, faculty explain why PPOs are gaining popularity

With the placement season beginning at the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) from December 1, many students have opted to sit out and not participate in this placement season. Why? They have managed to secure a PPO.

When students secure a placement offer before the placement drive starts on campus, that offer is called a pre-placement offer (PPO). The journey to securing a PPO begins over a year before the on-campus placement drive begins. Many engineering students take up summer internships during their course of study, be it as part of their curriculum or their own exploration. After successful completion of their internship period, some students are offered a full-time position by the company which changes their status from an intern to a permanent employee in that company.

The internships that students secure can be attained on-campus or off-campus, depending on students’ exploration and the institute’s partnerships. Pre-Placement Offer (PPO) is increasingly gaining popularity among IIT students. For example, IIT Madras (in the 2022-23 placement season) stated that the institute received a record-breaking 350 PPOs after the 2022 summer internships.

JEE Mains Result News Live Updates: Why Indian students in US prefer Maths/ Computer Science over Engineering

While engineering continues to dominate as the most popular field, this has seen a dip in recent years. Going by the data, in 2023-24, about 24.5 per cent Indians in the US pursued engineering, which is nearly a 5 per cent drop of 29.6 per cent in 2021-22. Meanwhile, maths or computer science are the most popular fields drawing Indians, with 42.9 per cent pursuing these in 2023-24.

Given the rapid growth of technology-driven industries, students are increasingly opting for programmes that align with emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, data science and machine learning, explained Sachin Jain, country manager, Educational Testing Service (ETS) India and South Asia.

Foreign education consultants also attribute these shifting job market demands to the “explosive growth” in fields like artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and cybersecurity

According to Sandeep Mehta, IIT Alumnus and co-founder, Vidyamandir Classes, the JEE Main cut-off for qualifying to sit in JEE Advanced 2025 will be based on aspects such as the difficulty level of the exam, number of aspirants, and overall performance. Going by recent trends, the general category cutoff is expected to be between the 93 to 95 percentile, which is approximately equivalent to about 85–90 marks out of 300. For OBC-NCL and EWS candidates, the cutoff is likely to be a bit lower, about 91 to 93 percentile, with scores around 80–85 marks.
