A Delhi Traffic Police head constable was suspended for allegedly assaulting a taxi driver following an altercation over document verification near central Delhi’s Paharganj area.
The action was taken after a purported video of the incident went viral on social media. The police, however, said they have not received any official complaint from the driver.
According to the police, the incident took place around 3 pm on Sunday. The head constable asked the taxi driver to stop for a routine check. While the officer was running a verification of the vehicle’s documents, an argument broke out between the two, which escalated into a scuffle.
In the purported video, the driver can be seen on the driver’s seat while the head constable allegedly showers punches and slaps on him. While some passersby recorded the incident, some also intervened — following which the head constable stopped.
A senior traffic police officer said that after taking cognisance of the video Tuesday, the head constable was placed under suspension and a departmental inquiry was initiated. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry, he said.
