Pune Pride Awards tomorrow

Priyadarshini Karve took the trouble of staying at rural households to find out how she could help women from health hazards posed to them by smoke from chulhas that burn wood. She understood their alarming health concerns and came up with a non-smoke chulha for them. Thereafter,she went on to address the irrigation problem of farmers at Phaltan and she is part of an irrigation project working to bring relief to drought-hit villages. Karve,along with others from the city,will be felicitated at Pune Pride Awards organised by Residency Club on Sunday.

The award ceremony is held as part of the anniversary celebrations of the club instituted in 1992.

“We have been organising the award function since the first anniversary of the club. It was the idea of our founder advisory board to recognise and felicitate citizens who have made the city proud. Every year,we constitute a list of citizens working for the betterment of the society and honour them,” said Leena Giri,vice-president,Brahma.

While Karve is being awarded for excellence in innovation,Nandu Natekar will be honoured for excellence in Sports. Pandit Sanjeev Abhyankar will be awarded for his contribution to Indian classical music in the art and culture category. Ram Takwale,a renowned educationist,will be felicitated for excellence in academics and Armene Modi,the Indian founder of Ashta No Kai,a Japanese organisation working for economic and social upliftment of rural women,will be honoured for excellence in social work.

Dajikaka Gadgil,founder of Pune’s Gold Council,who brought about a sense of reliability and trust in the gold market,will be felicitated for excellence in the corporate world and B R Malhotra,founder of Weikfield,who brought custard and jelly into the Indian market,will be awarded with an lifetime achievement award.

“The chief guest for the event is actor turned politician Shatrugan Sinha and the guest of honour is actor Poonam Dhillon,” said Giri.
