Movement casts its spell on youth

Since Tuesday morning when Anna was arrested in New Delhi,Pune has witnessed youth energy probably like never before.

When asked what Lokpal was,18-year-old Aarti looked stumped, but with a straight face she replied,“I am here to support Anna who is fighting against corruption…” Rugved Joshi of Abhinav School seemed equally alive to the situation. “Lokpal means a body of experts who will look into corruption cases,” he said, without blinking an eye.

Since Tuesday morning when Anna was arrested in New Delhi,Pune has witnessed youth energy probably like never before. Be it at Balgandharva Chowk,Fergusson College,Pimpri Chowk,Kharadi,Yerawada,Pimpri Chowk,Kalyaninagar or the far flung Maval region, youngsters wearing Gandhi topi,T-shirts denouncing corruption and supporting Anna can be seen either marching through streets or raising slogans at make-shift mandaps.

College students, specially engineering students, seemed to be right in the fore front. At Balgandharva Chowk, activists said students from COEP,Modern College of Engineering,Marathwada College of Engineering,Sinhagad College of Engineering and Garware College of Engineering landed early in the morning and joined the chorus of protest. Students of D Y Patil Enggineering College came all the way from Pimpri to be a part of the protest . Student Sudhir Dalvi rushed to stage and announced the students’ support. He did not stop at that. “They are saying MPs and MLAs will make law,but people should make law…,” he said amidst loud cheers.

The city reverberated with slogans like … Ek sur,Ek Tal,Jan Lokpal,Jan Lokpal.. Anna Nahi Aandhi Hey,Desh Ka Doosra Gandhi,Main Bhi Anna,Tu Bhi Anna,Ab Tu Saara Desh He Anna,Anna…

Activist Jugal Rathi summed up the mood at the stage,“Never before since Independence have the youngsters in the city participated in a movement like this. This is historical…” Usha Bajpai, who was participating in a peace march at Kalyaninagar, said,“We have people from all walks of life, including retired defence personnel. But youngsters are participating in a big way.”
