Rainy season breeds fungal infections galore,so some rudimentary hygiene habits can help keep the pesky infections at bay
Monsoons and fungal infections are not uncommon. Several suffer from this common skin infection during this season, says Dr D K Damle,a skin specialist. Fungi are microscopic plant organisms which cannot produce their own food, and hence invade either human skin, hair or nails to derive nutrition. Thus, they are categorised as parasites. About 90 per cent of all fungal infections of the skin are caused by dermatophytes ,other causes being candida and malassexia furfur. These fungi can invade our skin either from animals, soil or from an infected individual. Fungi are known to thrive well where there is warmth and moisture. Naturally, areas such as groins, thighs and feet are the most commonly affected. Fungal infection in the groin folds is known as jock itch. Infections of the body are called ‘ringworms’,while on the feet it is termed as ‘Athlete’s Foot’.
Explains Damle,Typically, there is an appearance of a red-coloured circular lesion, which is itchy in nature and gradually keeps growing in size in the absence of treatment.” Infections could spread rapidly in certain conditions like diabetes, obesity,in patients who are consuming heavy antibiotics or anti-cancer drugs, and in persons with weaker immune systems. Professional athletes and individuals wear closed footwear for long hours and are prone to fungal infection of feet as well as toenails, says Damle. Fingernails can get infected with scratching of affected sites as well,he adds. Children are susceptible to fungal infections of the scalp, especially if they come in contact with infected pet animals.
In suspected cases, one can perform scraping of skin or take a hair or nail specimen to confirm the diagnosis through mycological studies. Treatment comprises of using effective oral anti-fungals,as well as anti-fungal creams. Most of the time, improper and incomplete treatment can lead to recurrences. Adopting hygienic measures such as keeping the affected area dry, clean and aerated is equally important for quicker and long lasting improvement, says Damle, adding a cautionary message that it is also worthwhile to visit a qualified dermatologist to get rid of nagging problems on a permanent basis. Self medication with the help of over-the-counter preparations may not yield the desired complete recovery result.
