Master of the screen

When one thinks of a versatile actor who can easily get into the skin of varied characters, one after the other.

When one thinks of a versatile actor who can easily get into the skin of varied characters, one after the other, not many names spring to mind. Acting is akin to a magic show, and the actor is nothing less than a magician. In that sense, the one actor who has constantly proved his magical prowess is Anupam Kher. From his serious debut role of a father in distress in Saransh to the lovable friend in Lamhe,Kher’s USP is his versatility. One is never surprised to see him experimenting and it is with this very spirit that he is now foraying into the world of Marathi cinema with the movie Kashala Udhyachi Baat, being directed by Pramod Joshi.

Kher, along with the rest of the cast – Sachin Khedekar,Mrinal Kulkarni and Atul Parchure, was in Pune on Thursday for the mahurat shot of the film. Interestingly, the movie is simultaneously being made in Hindi by the same team with the title Chhodo Kal Ki Baatein. Kher shares,“We haven’t started the movie yet,but I really like the script. I agree with the message of the film which is why I took it up.”

The film is the story of a man’s journey towards understanding himself and Kher plays the role of a friend, philosopher and guide to Khedekar. “It’s a movie that is bound to entertain. Plus,it has a sensible message too that the audience can take home with them,” says Joshi, who is directing a Hindi movie for the first time.

For Kher, this step into Marathi cinema is like a new adventure. When asked why he never worked in a Marathi movie earlier,he says,“Because I wasn’t offered a role till now! I have worked in so many regional films, right from Telugu to Kannada,so I would have loved doing Marathi films too but the opportunity never came to me before. But,I am glad that I am doing it now as this is a golden period for Marathi cinema and I am happy to be a part of it.”

Kher has acted in several international projects and has just finished his latest film Break Away. His love for the silver screen hasn’t kept him away from theatre. He recently penned his life story for a play called Kuch Bhi Ho Sakta Hain which was staged in Pune and will now steal the spotlight in Mumbai.
