In the city to inaugurate a new centre,Vandana Luthra says wellness is a journey of transformation

With tact, panache and a winning attitude, she carved a niche for herself in the world of entrepreneurship. Vandana Luthra, founder,Vandana Luthra’s Curls and Curves (VLCC),passionately speaks about women’s rights and that, coupled with her business acumen and unfaltering spirit, catch one’s interest. She was in Pune on Friday to inaugurate the company’s sixth outlet at Magarpatta City, and her passion for her work was hard to miss.

“We work at a basic level. Ours is a journey of transformation. Right from a counselling session at the onset of our programme,to tailor-made programmes for our customers,we ensure sustainable results. People don’t pick and choose treatments; instead we pick the one that suits them best,” she says.

Luthra has changed the face of the beauty business. From a beauty salon to a wellness centre, the journey has been a long one. Talking about the hiccups along the way,she says,“When we started off,the idea was clear in my mind,it only needed good execution. There were a lot of roadblocks; it took me almost five to six years to change the mindset of the medical fraternity, but now everyone is together – the doctors, the nutritionists and the cosmetologists, which is just how I had imagined it to be.”

She believes that obesity in India has turned into an epidemic and needs urgent attention. Professionalism and an organised approach towards such problems have done wonders for VLCC,which has since become the umbrella brand for various sub-brands and has even spread its wings into the international market. Luthra has also recently been appointed as a member on the Special Task Force for Empowerment of Women by the Indian government. Discussing her views on women’s emancipation, she says,“ I don’t understand why women need to be bulldozed by men all the time. In fact, women make the best managers. I worked in 80 villages in Nimaran,Rajasthan, and I saw how women there were so independent. Women are strong and don’t need any emancipation; we just need self belief.”
