Hungarian chef Gabor Schreiner says that the distinguishing ingredient of an amazing cook is his passion for food

While average teenagers would be dreaming of a summer love story,Gabor Schreiner,Executive Chef of Nobu Budapest, was holding a knife in his hand and dreaming about being in a kitchen full of Japanese ingredients. Schreiner,a Hungarian, was inspired by celebrated Japanese chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa’s creativity and positive outlook towards food. “Chef Nobu says that food is imbued with the feelings and personality of the cook. He advises every chef to put his heart into cooking. It has become my motto,” says Schreiner, who will bring his culinary magic to the city.

The 41-year-old chef traces his love for cooking back to his childhood when he would observe his mother cook for the family. Growing up,he decided that it was what he wanted to do too. So he attended Gundel Károly Catering School to learn all the tricks of the trade. The more he learnt, the more he loved his vocation. “I wouldn’t mind waking up in the middle of the night to cook a meal. Passion for food turns a chef from being a good cook to an amazing cook. It can also make a street vendor an amazing cook and without passion a well trained cook’s food can be tasteless,” he says.

This passion has taken him places. “I have had the privilege of cooking for many royal families of Europe but my special memory is of a time about 10 years ago, when I cooked for the Japanese Emperor, who was visiting Hungary. That was a great challenge and opportunity,” says Schreiner.

Being able to visit India and cook for its people is another opportunity that the chef has long looked forward to. “I have heard a lot about Indian cuisine and how much people love to eat. Indian cuisine is both a culinary and a spiritual experience,” he shares, adding that he is looking forward to trying traditional dishes that India has to offer.

The chef will be visiting Hilton Shillim Estate Retreat and Spa near Pune from May 31 to June 6
