Hermes in Pune

When the Parisian saddler brand Hermes opened its second store in Pune (the first being at Delhi’s The Oberoi Hotel),earlier this year,there was a flurry of curiosity. “Isn’t that doffing the hat to the luxury consciousness of Pune?” lamented the luxury buyers of Mumbai. Hermes may be associated with its globally iconic bag — the Birkin — but it is neither the Birkin nor Kelly (inspired by Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco) that sum up the brand. Hermes is about sophistication and unflinching commitment.

It isn’t incidental that it opened in Pune,that has a racing tradition and old money. “We have clients from Pune and Mumbai,” says store manager Kavita Deore. The facade of the store is visible from Hotel Ista’s driveway,where it is located. A pink bag sits on a rack. Wallets and hand accessories are placed in a glass case and silk ties and scarves draw you closer,their subtle vibrancy contrasted with equestrian accessories and a custom-made saddle.
