Foolproof security plan,varsity promises Senate

The Senate members of the University of Pune (UoP) on Sunday expressed concern over the security on the varsity campus and the police warning that it could be a possible target for terror attacks.

The Senate members of the University of Pune (UoP) on Sunday expressed concern over the security on the varsity campus and the police warning that it could be a possible target for terror attacks. Acting vice-chancellor Arun Adsool,in reply, promised a foolproof security plan and informed the Senate of the security measures taken in the wake of the 13/2 German Bakery blast.

The Newsline had,on March 18,reported that the action committee appointed by the management council on the security issues was yet to meet. The issue was discussed at the senate meeting on Sunday,in which cut motions were presented on the varsity budget.

Gajanan Ekbote said the police had written to the UoP that it could be a possible target. “The varsity should be prepared for any eventuality and take proactive steps. It should also prepare a disaster plan besides providing the necessary medical facilities on the campus.”

Adsool said the varsity had already stepped up security at the International Students’ Centre (ISC). “We have procured metal detectors and will soon have more closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in place. We have also demanded four armed policemen at the centre.”

He said the varsity was planning to keep only one of its four entry gates open. “It will be a task in itself as staff staying on the campus will face inconveniences, but we will have to do it. The varsity is considering a proposal to close the Joshi Gate permanently as the traffic through the gate has increased manifold owing to constructions nearby.”

Ekbote suggested that the university should go in for a security audit. “Some schools and colleges in the city have done this already and we can get a feedback from them.”
