Flamboyant and Classy

The settings are inviting- big glass windows, complimented by real brick walls and wooden flooring highlighted with low lighting. Plus the wooden furniture reminds one of a European sidewalk cafe. The newly opened restaurant Flambos located on Bund Garden Road near INOX is all this and more. Billed as the first restaurant in the city to serve Brazilian cuisine the place has warm interiors combined with a minimalist design. While the idea is to promote Brazilian cuisine in the city, according to Chef Christopher Saleem Agha Bee,it is more about bringing fusion Brazilian cooking here.

“ Brazil has been a melting pot of cultures. So it has influences from Europe,Arabia and Africa. The idea is to bring all this together for people here,” he says. The name Flambos,as owner Anita Lazar puts it was born out of her numerous trips to Brazil. “It’s a fun name. It symbolises the sun and the sea,the year long parties of Mardi Gras, football and the carnival. In many ways everything about it is Brazil,” she says.

While the name signifies everything Brazil, the food however is a mix of varied cultures. There are soups that boast of having Thai influences as they are flavoured with lemon grass. And there are salads that have distinct tastes from the Meditteranean. In addition it is also one of the first restaurants in the city that boasts of an online menu and the captains take customer orders on tablet PC’s. “The idea was to make the place ecofriendly. So we did away with the old menus and the traditional way of taking orders. In fact it is even more beneficial for the customers. The menus will also display pictures of the dishes on the tablet. So that they can see what they order,” says Lazar.

The 85-seater restaurant, which opened its doors on May 4,may not look very large but that’s not something but Lazar is too concerned about. She says,“Its not a place where you come, rush through a main course and a dessert and leave. The whole idea is to recreate the chilled out atmosphere of Brazil. And that is not just through the food or the interiors but the entire dining ambiance that provides for this.”

Interestingly the Churrsacaria, which is a Brazilian Steakhouse, will also be operational at Flambos from May 30. Referring to the Churrassco style of cooking meat Chef Saleem says,“It is a steakhouse where the steak is cooked on charcoal. This is something that is very unique to Brazil and we will be bringing the same to the city soon.”
