Over the weekend, cinegoers in the city were transported to the world of Doraemon and Chibi Maruko Chan – the famous Japanese animation characters. In order to reach out to children as well as to the students of the Japanese language, the Consulate General of Japan in Mumbai and the Japan Foundation,in collaboration with National Film Archives of India (NFAI),organised the Japanese Animation Film Festival from October 1 to 3.

The main theatre at NFAI became the centre of attraction as a total of nine films were screened during the event, including films like Doraemon and Chibi Maruko Chan, which have topped the popularity charts around the world. On the popularity of Japanese animation,Prashant Pathrabe, director at NFAI,said,“Japanese animation is not high-end; its medium-level technology makes it appealing to its audiences.” The films that were screened proved to be important subjects of study for students of the Japanese language as well as of animation and filmmaking. “The films were projected on the big screen in a 35mm format,in order to allow students to evaluate them at a more detailed level,” said Pathrabe, adding,“Indian animation films, though well made, lack the vigour with which other animation films are marketed. This slack commercial approach needs to be corrected to ensure high success rate for our animation films.”

The films screened included The Prince of the Sun: Hols’ Great Adventure (1968),one of the classic masterpieces of anime in Japan,Mind Game,Captain Harlock in Acardia,From Grimm’s Fairy Tales: The Golden Bird,Miyori in the Sacred Forest,Cyborg 009,Glass Rabbit,Chibi Maruko Chan and Nobita’s Dinosaur based on the favourite comic and teleseries,Doraemon.
