Pune police commissioner Satyapal Singh on Wednesday inaugurated a task force to provide round-the-clock security at the Hinjewadi Infotech Park, which witnessed a spate of crimes in the recent past. The force has been formed jointly by the city police and the Hinjewadi Industries Association (HIA).
The task force comprises two patrol vans, with each having two police officers,a dog squad and four armed security personnel. These vans will patrol all the three phases of the IT park round the clock besides helping the police in nakabandi.
The joint task force is not an alternative to the police, but a joint effort to enhance security at the IT Park, said GM Rao,former president of HIA. The industries in the park will also assist the police in tackling cyber crimes. The force will focus on monitoring the open space and arterial roads in the area. The vehicles will work in three shifts throughout the day, Rao said.
The force will have jurisdiction over Hinjewadi,Wakad and arterial roads leading to the IT hub. A decision to form the task force was taken after the German Bakery blast in February this year.
Speaking on the occasion, joint commissioner of police (law and order) Rajendra Sonawane said the police had received permission to increase the staff at Hinjewadi police station in the wake of security concerns from women employees of the IT park. In the past two years, there have been five cases of rape or rape and murder in the area.
HIA president Mrityunjay Singh and representatives of various IT companies were present on the occasion.
