Brave new world

The heroes are back and they’re trying to put their past behind them.

HEROES SEASON 4
STAR WORLD
MONDAY TO THURSDAY: 10 pm
RATING: ***

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?The heroes are back and they’re trying to put their past behind them. Claire Bennet, the self-healing girl, decides to go to college, post her family’s break-up and tries to live her life again, using her old name and telling the truth. Peter Petrelli is back at his old job of saving lives, only this time, with his enhanced powers,he’s a heroic paramedic. Matt Parkman, after having successfully turned the villainous Sylar into Nathan Petrelli,is trying to lead a normal life with his wife and infant son. He’s sworn not to use his powers of mind reading ever again, but it’s not as easy as he thinks. As for time-traveller Hiro Nakamura and his friend Ando Masahashi, they’ve set up a Dial-A-Hero service, which doesn’t have quite the effect they’re hoping for. Their first client is a little girl who wants them to rescue her cat. At the same time,Noah Bennet and Tracy Strauss seem to be putting their past differences behind them and embarking on a new, warmer relationship. Mohinder Suresh has quit researching superhumans and has gone back to his teaching job in India.

But as usual with Heroes, nasty doings are just bursting to get free. A phantasm of Sylar is haunting Parkman, while the real Sylar is struggling to emerge from under Petrelli’s skin. A carnival of ‘freaks’ is posing a sinister threat to the new and improved Company, which seeks to keep track of all the evolved humans in the world. Their leader,Samuel, can manipulate geological materials like stones and dirt, and his mission in life seems to be to avenge his brother’s death, retrieve a mysterious compass and show the world the mutants exist and they need to be feared.

WHO’S IN IT?The usual cast of characters is back, with some interesting additions. As usual,Hayden Panettiere (Claire Bennet),Milo Ventimiglia (Peter Petrelli),Greg Grunberg (Matt Parkman),Ali Larter (Tracy Strauss),Zachary Quinto (Sylar),Jack Coleman (Noah Bennet) and Sendhil Ramamurthy (Mohinder Suresh) play the lead roles. But this time the show is stolen by yet another villain,Samuel, played by Robert Knepper, who is splendidly creepy and unbalanced. The viewer doesn’t quite know what Samuel’s game is and Knepper efficiently plays up both the mystique and menace in the character.

WHAT’S HOT?One of the biggest problems with the last two seasons of Heroes was that the original plot seemed to be going nowhere. The agenda of the first season was clear—to establish the existence of mutants. With the second and the third season, however, that mission got lost in a series of confusing intrigues between the ‘good’ mutants and the ‘bad’ ones. To top it all,the ominous presence of the company was underplayed. With this season, once again the primary plot comes in focus—whether or not to let the world recognise and accept evolved humans for what they are.

WHAT’S NOT?One of our favourite heroes, the adorable Hiro Nakamura, has been diagnosed with a terminal

illness. Not cool.

SHOULD YOU WATCH IT?If you thought the first season of Heroes held promise, only to be let down by the subsequent two seasons, you should definitely tune into the latest volume. It once again gets back on track, without too many confusing sub-plots.
