Battery WAVE touches Pune

A team of nine from Switzerland, touring seven cities in India as part of the World Advanced Vehicle Expedition (WAVE),2011,were in Pune on Sunday to exhibit their battery operated cars at the College of Engineering (CoEP). Organised by students of IIT Bombay as an environmental initiative for their Techfest 2012,WAVE 2011 is being held in the first week of January.

“We have come to India to spread awareness against pollution. These green vehicles are a part of the campaign for electric mobility,” said Louis Palmer, tour director and initiator of WAVE.

The green group is the initiator of numerous projects, including two pioneering global circum-navigations with electric cars, the Solartaxi and the ZERO Race. “We aim at promoting renewable energies,” added Palmer.

Last year,WAVE completed an 11-city tour in Europe by travelling 3,000 km to raise awareness on green vehicles through exhibitions and lectures. “We visited government buildings and met business honchos to spread the word,” said Palmer. “This is a great solution for a country like India,” said Julianna Priskin, the sustainability manager of WAVE.

Palmer’s visit to the city was organised by third year students of Mechanical Engineering and the Society of Automotive Engineers Collegiate Club of CoEP. After reaching Pune on Saturday night,Palmer interacted with students and exhibited cars on the college campus. The small two-seater electric cars can go about 150 km non-stop with overnight charging.

“Palmer and his team were impressed with our vintage collection of lathe milling machines and the number of computerised numeric codes in the department,” said Shreyas Puranik,a third year mechanical engineering student at CoEP.

“The college has many facilities which should be an inspiration for young students to explore the world of electric energy,” Palmer said. “Palmer promised to visit us once we start researching on battery operated cars,” added Ajinkya Somvanshi, another student.
