The device is currently made at a cost of Rs 5,500 but researchers feel that when the device is produced at a commercial scale, the cost could come down to Rs1,500.
THE INDIAN Institute of Technology, Bombay, is the 26th best university among the universities in the BRICS region and emerging economies, according to the Times Higher Education (THE) rankings released Thursday.
In February, at least 40 class XI students from migrant schools in Jammu and Kashmir and their teachers visited the IIT-B campus for five days. The students saw the labs and were briefed about some of the research work by PhD scholars. Afterwards, they attended science and sky watching workshops, among other co-curricular activities.
The series, which began in August last year, culminated in a discussion last week about sexism in everyday lives on the campus. The discussion was based on the responses received in the IITBWomenSpeak campaign.
Placement data show that between 2012-13 and 2016-17, the number of offers made by the IT sector dropped by 34 per cent.
“Casual sexism and gender discrimination are very deeply ingrained in our society. We need sustained sensitising campaigns to address this problem. The student affairs cell and the women’s cell make continued efforts to sensitise students about gender discrimination,” said Soumyo Mukherjee.
