As he saluted the courage and grit of Puneites to fight terror attack,US Ambassador Dr Timothy Roemer on Wednesday praised the German Bakery owners for their intention to restart the bakery operations in two months.

“It is this spirit to rebound with resilience that has to be saluted and will definitely be a source of inspiration not only in the community but in the world,” said Roemer after visiting the site.

Owners of German Bakery, the Kharoses, said the bakery will start in two months and they will take a loan to meet the expenses. Snehal Kharose, daughter of owner Smita Kharose, said they would also look at donations for restarting the bakery.

With the bakery blast completing three months on May 13,Kharoses are planning a new look for the shop and are awaiting civic body nod to construct a staircase to the first floor. The seating capacity will remain the same. The Kharoses are using the first floor multi-cuisine restaurant owned by them as part of the new re-design. The bakery will have a new look retaining some of the old bakery charm, assured Snehal.

At another function in the city, the ambassador called for education in English as it opens up a door of opportunites. Extending the US reach out programme to the Muslim community, the envoy in his maiden visit to Pune, handed away certificates to teachers from Urdu schools and madrasas at Maharashtra Cosmopolitan Education Society’s Poona College for successfully completing a 10-day workshop on English language skills.

‘India will get access to Headley’

US Ambassador to India Timothy J Roemer said his country was co-operating at the highest level to provide India access to Pakistani-American Lashkar operative David Headley. However,he said some issues would have to be resolved by India. “India has submitted a questionnaire relating to Headley to the US government and the process to give access to him is under consideration.” He,however, did not elaborate on the issues that Indian needed to resolve. “The recent visit of the Solicitor General of India to the US and interaction with American authorities regarding Headley reflects the seriousness of the US-India cooperation on global security.”

He said his recent visits to Pakistan and Bangladesh were also aimed at addressing trans-national issues.
