The Samarth police had arrested Patil after company owner Vinit Shah suspected his involvement in the crime. Patils accomplices were arrested for abetting him in the crime. Additional public prosecutor Shashikant Jagtap examined 16 witnesses in the case. The evidence of a blacksmith from whom Patil had purchased the knife and also conductor of a state transport bus in which Patil had travelled to Kolhapur proved vital in the case, he said.
In another case, six years security guard Sashibhushan Kumarsingh Rajput (32) shot dead guard Ankush Kokare in Hadapsar, additional sessions judge S S Gadge sentenced him to life imprisonment. On November 29,2006,Rajput had shot Kokare with his rifle killing him instantly. The Hadapsar police had arrested Rajput and charged him for murder by using fire arms.
According to the court, there was circumstantial evidence to link Rajput with the murder as he was in possession of a rifle and cartridges. After the crime,he had tried to enter the residence of a neighbour where the incident took place but he was caught by the people.
The judge also relied on the ballistic report that confirmed that the bullet was fired from Rajputs revolver and residue of ammonium oxide was found on Kokares clothes. Rajput was acquitted under the Arms Act as his fire arms licence was not produced before the court.
