The six-pillar bridge between Gambhirgarh village and Goro Chowk under Sukhani police station of Kishanganj subsided in the middle as a pillar sunk by one and a half feet.

Sources said lifting and cutting of sand and soil could be one possible reason for the pillar to sink.

NHAI project manager (Purnia) Arvind Kumar said that the bridge was almost ready and work on its approach road had been on from either side.

“We are looking into all possible reasons for this with the construction company. There is no question of compromising with the quality of the bridge,” he said.

The project is of strategic importance as it will provide an alternative road along Indo-Nepal road. It can provide alternative to NH-57 (Muzaffarpur to Purnia).
