Sushmita bats for tiger cause

She doesn’t wear tiger conservation on her sleeve, but has tiger tattooed on her back.

She doesn’t wear tiger conservation on her sleeve, but has tiger tattooed on her back. She holds the animal in high esteem as she is “Durga mata ki bhakt” and tiger is mata’s vehicle. But one of the main reasons why she volunteered to be part of Nagpur’s campaign as “tiger gateway” of the country is also the request from BJP national president Nitin Gadkari.

“Nitinji invited me to be part of this programme,” she told media persons before inaugurating Waghotsava 2012,an event organised by Friends of Tiger Country Trust here.

“I have zero interest in politics. I think it is best left to people who are good at it,” she said when asked if she would join politics.

“What also attracted me here today are my fond memories of Nagpur where I spent four years as a child when my father was posted in the Air Force here. My younger brother was born here,” she added.

The trust has started associating people from various walks of life with the trust as “friends of the tiger country.” Sen became the first friend of the trust.

Sen said,“I wouldn’t be a brand ambassador, but have agreed to be associated with the cause for now. Nagpur is at a vantage position with around 300 tigers around it. It can add so much to the tourist inflow if the cause of tiger is promoted and can also help local farmers with additional opportunities.”

When asked if she has ever been to any of the eight tiger reserves around Nagpur,Sushmita said,“No.”
