At first look, its extremely easy to comprehend whats on canvas but youll want to linger a little longer. Then, the thought behind the abstract but realistic image hits you. Devajyoti Rays work falls into a genre known as pseudorealism. Here, the artist uses completely different colours for different parts of the human anatomy but the outline of the image remains real. This is a fairly new genre in the world of art and is inspired from the pseudorealism that was seen in American films in the early 1990s,like Hulk,Superman and, recently,Avatar. It was only in 2003 that Ray started painting this form. It was the first of the kind in this country even though it had been popular in the West for a few years already. As all new trends,it was quite difficult to get any commercial success in the beginning, but now people have started to recognise my work. Ray,who is a government official in Karnataka, has participated in eight solo and 16 group shows in places like USA,Germany,France,UK,Maldives over the last few years. Twenty of his paintings will be showcased as part of the exhibition,Pseudorealism Once Again,at the Museum Gallery,Kala Ghoda. The exhibition is on till January 21.
