Peddar Road breaks again

A portion of Peddar Road outside Jaslok Hospital caved in on Monday afternoon.

A portion of Peddar Road outside Jaslok Hospital caved in on Monday afternoon. This is the second time in two months that the road has collapsed.

At around 4.25 pm,a manhole over the century-old stormwater drains in the area gave way creating a four-foot crater.

L S Vhatkar, chief engineer of the stormwater drains department, said the drains would have to be replaced for a long-term solution.

“MSRDC has suggested shifting the drains to the side of the road. This will also ease traffic flow,” he said.

Barricades around the damaged portion cut the three-lane road into two causing a major traffic jam during evening peak hours.

“Repairs will take three to four hours. As soon as we got news of the cave-in,we sent staff to the site,” said assistant commissioner Parag Masurkar of D ward.

Senior inspector of Tardeo traffic police chowky R M Thakur said,“We have created an extra lane on the southbound stretch of Gopalrao Deshmukh Road to ease traffic. We have also diverted traffic through several arterial roads.”
