The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) finally demolished the Sant Dyaneshwar flyover at Lalbaug on the Dr B R Ambedkar Road on Saturday.
Built in 1971,the flyover was one of the oldest in the city and the first flyover to be razed. Over 100 people worked round the clock to get the job done.
On Saturday, the ramps on both the sides were demolished. The MMRDA had requested traffic diversion between Kalachwokie to Bharatmata junction, leading to jams on other roads.
On Sunday, two lanes that were closed to traffic would be opened. We are opening one lane on both sides for traffic. But only small vehicles and BEST buses would be allowed to use these lanes, said an MMRDA official. But this would only be done after the traffic police give the green signal, added R Ramanna, additional chief, transport and communication.
JCP (traffic) Sanjay Barve couldnt be reached for his comment. However,a traffic constable at the Bharatmata junction said,Even after two lanes are opened,we expect congestion as it is one of the important roads connecting the suburbs with the city.
Though the main structure has been razed,MMRDA officials said they still need 25 more days to complete the work. The major work of demolition has been done. But,there are some other works like removal of debris and road levelling that remain, said Ramanna, adding,There would not be any heavy machines which trouble people.
The MMRDA has deployed some 600 trucks to take debris to a site at Mankhurd. More trucks would be used to clear the debris.
Residents who had to face air and noise pollution for five days, can now heave a sigh of relief. Many shopkeepers had also shut their shops during demolition due to the pollution.
