Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has directed various infrastructure agencies in the city to jointly take up a time-bound programme to improve the quality of roads over the next five years.
Chavan held a meeting with top officials from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation,Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, Public Works Department and technical roads experts on Saturday,wherein he set a deadline of five years for the agencies to jointly formulate long term actions that will ensure good quality of roads in Mumbai.
He also ordered separate engineering units for various departments of the BMC such as roads,water works,storm water drainage and sewerage operations so that engineers can gain expertise in their respective departments. At present,engineers are often transferred from one department to other and many a times a person who has not worked in a particular department earlier ends up being appointed as the chief engineer of that department. He also insisted on proper training to all engineers in these units.
The meeting was attended by BMC chief Subodh Kumar,MMRDA commissioner Rahul Asthana,Urban Development department principal secretary Manu Kumar Srivastav,PWD secretary Dhananjay Dhawad,chairman of BMCs Standing Technical Advisory Committee N V Merani and IIT professor and head of its civil engineering department K V Krishnarao.
Chavan ordered authorities to take up road repair works between 12 noon to 4pm without obstructing traffic and after taking required permissions from the traffic police. He ordered strict action against road contractors who show carelessness and compromise in quality. He wanted contractors to put up details of material used for road construction on their websites. This will facilitate surprise checks by officials.
He also ordered setting up of laboratories at locations from where road material is supplied.
